"Could your customer recognize your voice versus everyone else that does what you do in your industry?

If you don't have a clear answer to that, then you need me."

That's just one of the truth bombs that Chris Ward, Jr. shared with me when I hosted him on The Storytelling Lab earlier this year.

I met Chris through TikTok and the first video I ever saw of him showcased how heart-centered he was. Then, I realized his niche was storytelling, so I was like, "Hey, me too!"

Then everything that fell out of his mouth from then on was like gold.

So I had to scoop some up for myself and share it with you.

Chris is a brand strategist and helps personal brands and businesses find their brand voice and use it to communicate to their audience through stories.

And then use those stories to create consistent content.

Chris and I are kindred spirits and I picked up on that immediately when I saw his content on TikTok.

Once we started talking on the show, the similarities continued to reveal themselves We both loved UNC basketball. We both lost parents to cancer. And we both helped clients find their unique voices through the power of storytelling.

That last one (the similarities in our work) became the crux of our conversation.

How, when you do the same thing as someone else, do you differentiate yourself in order to best find and serve your ideal audience?

This episode became quite meta in that way.

But both Chris and I understand our brand voices are different.

Maybe mine will help you. Maybe his would more.

The point is for YOU to find yours.

Then you can focus on doing your best work.

"I don't look at it as 'creating content.' I just extend conversations that are in my head to the people that they may matter to.”

If you struggle to make your brand or business stand out among the crowd in your field, this is the episode for you!

Some of the highlights of our conversation:

  • The journey from graphic design to a "heart-centered storyteller"

  • How to answer the question, "What do you do for a living?"

  • The easiest way to generate content consistently

  • How to find what makes you stand out (in your field or at your company)

  • Taking his "What's Your Brand Voice Type" quiz

  • Why your competitors aren't really competition

  • How he started public speaking at age 10 (!) and competing at 13

  • His mom's advice: "Treat your life as a project, and you're the project manager. Find the right people for your team."

As always, I hope you enjoy the episode!

Peace and Love,

Rain
